Cartesian Motion - Blog Post

The idea for my film came about while I was reading a book about philosophy. One of the passages in the book was about the philosophy of motion. I immediately knew what I wanted to make my film about, so I went out to capture my dogs fighting on video. After getting about 3 minutes of footage, I went back inside to edit the film, using various editing tools I had utilized throughout the year to make it unrecognizable.

At school the next day, I took some shots of unmoving objects and a couple of shots of moving subjects. Afterward, I assembled my footage together, interlaying the footage with quotes from philosopher Rene Descartes. Initially, I had planned to use Krzysztof Penderecki's music to play in the background, but when I uploaded the completed video to Youtube, I received a copyright strike. I went back, and decided to use a different composer's music, and re-edited the footage to better sync with the new track.

Overall, I am somewhat satisfied with the end result. While I did not start with a script, I had a shot list I created before filming, but at the time I was expecting to only be filming at home. At school, I found shots I wanted to use and abandoned the shot list altogether. If I had stuck with the shot list, I believe that my film would have seemed less like a collection of random shots and more of a cohesive film.
